TECHNIQUE

  1. Assess for the more patent nostril.

  2. Apply topical nasal vasoconstrictor.

  3. Dilate selected nostril with a lubricated nasal airway.

  4. Insert nasotracheal tube into the nostril with the bevel opening facing laterally. Do not force the tube.

  5. When the tube reaches the oropharynx, perform direct laryngoscopy.

  6. Forceps can be used to grasp the endotracheal tube and direct it pass the vocal cords. The forceps should be in a closed position when entering the oropharynx.  Do not grasp the cuff.
